Sugar Junkie by Rebecca Hill: If You Wrote an Auto-Biography, What Would Its Title Be?

February 15, 2012With our busy lives, there’s always so much to do. Work, errands, doctor’s visits, dental cleanings, hair appointments, sneaking cheesecake, exercise class, oil changes, and, of course, the occasional 3-4 hour detailed daydream about what we’d do if we won the $300 million dollar lottery! (I’ve got it all sketched out dollar for dollar as I’m sure you do too!)Along with those millions would come a lot of media attention and the inevitable book deal. Not wanting to be caught off guard, I recently started thinking about what I’d call my autobiography. Here’s what I came up with:Top 10 Possible Titles for My Autobiography10. (Good Title) Diary of a Sugar Junkie9. (Better Title) Diary of a REFORMED Sugar Junkie8. (Best Title) The Secret To Losing Weight & Being Healthy and Thin(Actually, everyone already knows “the secret” – it’s called diet and exercise… so nix this title.)7. This Shit Cannot Happen Again (this is currently my favorite title)6. Ode to Brussels Sprouts5. How to Make Broccoli Taste Like Brownies(If I could figure this out, think of the millions I’d make!)4. Just Do It!(I know Nike already has this slogan – but really, doesn’t it come down to this when we’re talking about the need to follow a healthy diet and exercise? Love it, like it, don’t like it – whatever …just do it! And by “it” I mean exercise at least 3 times/week and eat healthfully.)3. Jelly Beans for Breakfast(Not really a good title – but, as I was driving home last night, I was craving jelly beans so it was on my mind)2. Questions for God(I have many, but near the top of my list is the question all sugar junkies ponder. If sugar is so bad for me (and it is) why do our taste buds like it so much? If we are “an intelligent design”, why do we often crave things that are incredibly bad for us?)And the #1 Title I’d Love for My Autobiography To Have:1. Reaching Deeper Understanding and Self Realization Through Compassion, Curiosity and The Pursuit of Healthy LivingIf you were asked to write an autobiography, what would it be called? (I think the answer to this question is revealing because it shows how you view your life and it puts a spotlight on the goals you are pursuing. I would title mine “Time Wounds All Heels.”
Full disclosure – “The Long Sufferer” is my husband, Tom. He got new shoes last week and they gave him a blister… Eat some brussels sprouts, sweetheart – they can fix anything!!!
It would be called “And this too will pass” or “time will heal all wounds.” You know what kind of year I have had so have to keep thinking positive thoughts and putting one foot in front of the other and keep the chin up. I am just glad to have friends like you and the crew to keep me going.
And I know that in addition to “putting one foot in front of the other” you and your husband have also been trying to eat healthfully and that’s so important – to keep the body strong, especially when you’re dealing with stressful things emotionally. You’re doing well, Loretta – and yes, “This Too Shall Pass.”
So, I’m guessing, “Doing Doritos” is out?

For my autobiography I would pick the title, “Home is Where the Heart Is.” So many times we go to great lengths to attempt to keep/get ourselves centered. We’re longing for that root of real life and its heartbeat but we reach for the quick grab-on-the-run chip fix and its ilk. Then we reach again because we were not heartened by the first fleeting, lifeless fix.
I’m picturing a chip: no heart and only broken greasy fragments at bag’s end. Contrast that with the rich visual beauty of healthy foods—avocado, melon, berries, a simple pea. These foods come from their home in the soil and literally offer us a taste from the heart of their homes. These foods feed our hearts and keep us calm and fed and centered—-and beautiful as we move about in the wider world, able to offer a soulful, neighborly manner and when we put our feet up day’s end. We KNOW the difference. We know it deep in our own bones.
So, though I do sometimes “do Doritos” I would like the sum writ of my life to be more a read about finding the way back to a real home. Real food, and its happy growth and preparation, is a necessary element of such a heart.
Dorothee, what a beautiful writer and thoughtful thinker you are. And yes, the body and soul do know the difference between a greasy potato chip and “whole foods” such as avacados, melons, berries and peas. Thank you for your inspiring words!
